Wakedead Gathering, The: Dark Circles EP
With one demo, Ars Notoria, released in 2008 and their debut full length, Tenements of Ephemera, arriving in 2010, the one-man band of Andrew Lampe known as The Wakedead Gathering quickly established its might in terms of musicianship and death metal morbidity. Primitive and raw, his ability to craft elaborately executed and well-balanced savagery is matched only by the sheer weight of his music. And so with Dark Circles, there are plenty more revolting riffs, tempo and feel changes, and dynamic gymnastics that underpinned his previous works. And like those works, Lampe isn't revolutionising or reinventing anything. What he is doing, however, is producing some seriously good death metal. Instead of mimicking the usual suspects that so many retro death metal bands are happy to imitate, Lampe's approach is more a veneration and so, even though you can hear the influence of those bands, he's able to carve his own identity onto the rotten and still-twitching cadaver of death metal. Atmospheric and brutal, melodic and aggressive, this EP should give death metal diehards plenty to chew on until The Wakedead Gathering bring us their next album. Recommended.
