Casenave, Gustavo: Tango Casenave

Gustavo Casenave is a Uruguayan pianist who moved to New York in 1997. He has been hailed as one of that country's best musicians and after listening to his new album Tango Casenave I am forced to agree. His performance is truly virtuosic as is the rest of his band which includes Pedro Giraudo (bass), Nick Danielson (violin), and Juan Pablo Jofre Romarion (bandoneon). Eddie Gomez adds bass on track 2 and Lautaro Greco plays bandoneon on tracks 4 and 7.

This is at its heart a tango jazz album so if you dig the genre you will find plenty to love here. Just listen to the frantic pace set in "Noviembre", the excellent album opener. Dramatic crescendos of violin and bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument) make room for delicate piano chords before building again, even venturing into a carnival tinged melody. In "La Confianza" the piano and bass offer a solid foundation before a frantic pace is achieved. It is an intense offering with the piano being the star of the show. "Miñoqui" features bouncy piano chords and space filling violin with both getting equal share. It's a riveting listen as is the rest of the album.

Each song on Tango Casenave is virtuosic in performance, dynamically rich and highly listenable. It is an excellent jazz album and one that I can recommend without hesitation.
