Lavett: Find Your Purpose

What triggered my interest in the new Swedish group Lavett is that their vocalist is in fact the exceptional Daniel Heiman. If you are familiar with Daniel's former bands then Lavett leans more towards the modern hard and heavy metal style of Heed than the explosive power metal that Lost Horizon did so well. What Daniel did vocally with Lost Horizon was just so amazing it's such a shame they weren't able to continue working together as while Heed was really good Lost Horizon was on another level.

I am unfamiliar with Lavett's other four members and their previous groups, but from what I have read they are all experienced performers who have united to form this band. So besides the fact that Lavett has one of the best vocalists in metal how compelling is Lavett's debut material on Find Your Purpose? Well it's a reasonably solid metal album but certainly not the gripping release that I was hoping to hear as songs like "The Mark" certainly don't hit it for me. Overall Find Your Purpose is not one that leaves a strong and memorable impression as there are not nearly enough highlights, and in this case I could do without those screaming vocal additions, you know the ones bands like Bullet For My Valentine like to incorporate. Lavett have them here on such songs as "We Can't Go On" and "It's Not Over", but really they aren't needed, especially when Lavett have someone like Daniel up front.

Compared to what those previous bands released with Daniel, Find Your Purpose just isn't as good, it's as simple as that. I went back for a refresher by revisiting those albums and Daniel just slays but in comparison while Find Your Purpose has its moments in the end it just leaves me feeling like I want more. Some may find this release really delivers the goods and say that isn't a fair comparison as Lavett is so different to Lost Horizon, but really doesn't it come down to how good the material is? Lavett just trails behind, and I want to feel inspired when experiencing a band not indifferent.
