A Perfect Day: A Perfect Day
Roberto Tiranti: vocals and bass, alongside Andrea Cantarelli on guitars with Alessandro Bissa bashing the drums are A Perfect Day and their eponymous debut album has just been released on Frontiers Records. Andrea Cantarelli is a member of Italian metallers Labyrinth whilst Alessandro Bissa also boasts Vision Divine on his CV. A Perfect Day is less rocking than one might otherwise expect but is by no means a dud.
When I say that the music is less rocking than their parents band what I mean is probably less metal but the songs are quite muscular especially "Waiting on the Edge" and at times they even sound like Firewind at their most poppy. If A Perfect Day lacks in any way it is the lack of a standout track but things are consistently sound if not groundbreaking. One thing that isn't sound is the cover art and band logo which look more death metal than what is actually on offer and may well guide listeners in the wrong direction which would be a shame given that there is much to enjoy here like the guitar section in "Warm Embrace".

A Perfect Day: A Perfect Day Posted by Steven Reid, SoT Staff Writer on 2012-12-07 19:21:01 My Score:
This self titled debut from A Perfect Day, finds half of the band Labyrinth branching out from the power metal their day-job serves up, into a more late 80s, early 90s version of melodic hard rock that sounds as current as it does retro. Combining big riffs, sharp melodies and a stinging production to soaring vocals, thundering drums and booming bass, makes for an album that doesn't skimp on the aggression, but prefers to deliver it with a debonair eye for the more subtle. It is an approach that the likes of Extreme or even Talon thrive upon - although there is also more than a pinch of the American hard rock of Alter Bridge in evidence as well. That said the trio of Andrea Cantarelli (guitars), Roberto Tiranti (bass/vocals) and Alessandro Bissa (drums) don't shy away from huge swathes of guitar that hints at the sound of their other shared band too.
The mix is excellent, with bold, yet accessible themes grabbing the imagination through stunning vocals that match the gritty, yet melodic guitars, resulting in songs that hit hard, before they caress and cajole their way into your memory. Whether it is the instant guitar attack of this album's (and band's) title track, or the catchy chorus of the same song, time and again you find yourself replaying parts of these songs in your head long after you've put the CD back in the case. However more importantly the likes of the almost power ballad like "Silent Cry", symphonically tinged "Waiting On The Edge", or mixture of brooding riffs and sharpened hooks of "Now And Forever" remain as confident and impactful after numerous listens. While "Alone And Free (Rockblind)" combines the best parts of all of those traits to make for one of the album's highlights.
The fact this trio know each other so well means this release has far more swagger and well earned belief than most debut efforts and while A Perfect Day aren't exactly reinventing the wheel, there's no denying that their marrying of vintage themes, modern attack and a clear sharp production will result in across the board appeal. Not that I'm hoping for the demise of Labyrinth, however I have to say that on the strength of this album, there's no denying that a quick fire return from A Perfect Day, would indeed be pretty much...perfect!
