Arbrynth: Arbrynth
Aussie band, Arbrynth's debut self titled, full length disc is 55 minutes of haunting melodies coupled with dark imagery that is quite brutal and beautiful, all in the same breath. If you can imagine airy and earthy Folk music fused with the sheer brutality of Death Metal with both Cookie Monster and elegant clean vocals, then you are beginning to enter the world that Arbrynth have created.
Consisting of Dodds on guitar & vocals, Junty on drums, Tina on bass & vocals and Pete on guitars & vocals, this self titled CD is a 7 track journey, to say the least. No song clocks in under 6 minutes and with the stark contrast of clean female & male vocals against the guttural growling, Arbrynth are an attention getter. Album starter, "Amidst The Ruin", is an uptempo, Death Metal like, way to kick things off. Their use of Folk inspired clean vocal harmonies, acoustic guitars and songwriting ability make them more than a nod to bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Nightwish, which fans will easily draw a comparison to. The atmospheric landscape that is painted from track to track is quite surreal and makes songs like the more methodical and slow, "At Rivers End" or the more bombastic and deathy opening of, "Black Veil", stand out.
The musicianship is top notch and the overall production is quite good for an Indie release. Arbrynth's debut is filled with emotion and is quite a mature release for a bands first effort. There is so much depth within their songwriting on this disc, whether that is the stark vocal contrasting or the profound, almost dreamlike musical soundscape that is present on every song on this record. Arbrynth are a band that needs to be heard. They are simply brilliant!
