Sinister: The Carnage Ending

It's always fascinating to me to look at the Wikipedia listing for certain bands. I especially get a kick out of the lists of former members, especially when they are really long. The list of former members of Megadeth, for example, has its own separate page. Sinister has 15 former members, a fairly high number, but some bands have far more. So far as I can tell, none of the current members were there at the founding. Most, in fact, haven't been in the band 10 years. In any event, the musical group known as Sinister has released ten albums over the course of an obviously rocky career. I've never heard their music before, so I can't and won't compare the old stuff with the new stuff.

This album is completely dedicated to the art of well-played death metal. All of the songs, though hewn directly from the same wood, are strong, tight, and powerful examples of what really good death metal can sound like. I was especially pleased with the energy on this release; the guitars, bass, and, especially, the drums keep things going at the strongest of paces for just over 45 minutes. My favorite track, "Regarding the Imagery" has a short, but very effective guitar solo. I was pleased that the too-often-used tremolo picking was employed on the lower strings, giving the album a feeling of movement and energy that is not always evident when the repetition is limited to higher notes. Check out "Defamatory Content" or "Blood Ecstasy" for good examples. Fans of good death metal drumming, though Toep Duin's ability to be spot on. Some drummers lose their rhythm a little through their blast beats; not this guy, he stays on track effortlessly and gives that style of playing a feeling of freshness. I'll bet watching him perform is a study in energy and endurance. This is a solid release, highly recommended for fans of death metal.
