Looking Out Looking In is the seventh solo release from Simon Townsend, younger brother to Pete and also a member of the current incarnation of the legendary rock band The Who. Though he's relegated to rhythm guitar and backing vocals with The Who, on Looking Out Looking In Simon shows he is also a very capable writer and vocalist, as many of these songs are bright, catchy pop rock fare that for many will remind of some of Pete's early '80s solo releases. Tunes like "There's a Girl", "Something New", and "Stay" all contain memorable melodies and layers of shimmering acoustic & electric guitar tones from Simon and Tony Lowe. There's even a few Who styled hard rockers, such as "Forever And a Day", "Make It", and "Electric Friend", as well as tender ballads like "Bed of Roses" and "Still Love".
For anyone thinking that all the talent in the Townsend family stops with Pete, you had better think again. Simon's Looking Out Looking In is an enjoyable album filled with catchy pop rock, soulful ballads, gentle folk, and a few hard rockers, basically a little something for everyone.
