OK, so I love the band Death just as much as any extreme metal fan, and for most of us, the early Florida death metal style is something we all treasure. Skeletal Remains apparently also feel that way, so much so that their latest release Beyond the Flesh is nothing short of Death & Obituary worship from start to finish, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. What they lack in originality they certainly make up for it in execution, as Beyond the Flesh is one hell of an old school, brutal death metal release. You'll easily be taken back to the glory days of the Florida death metal scene, circa Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy era Death and those early Obituary and Morbid Angel records, with tunes like "Desolate Isolation" and "Traumatic Existence". Plenty of brutal, crushing riffage, blazing lead guitar solos, and vocal growls & screams right out of Chuck Schuldiner and John Tardy playbook. What they lack however are memorable tunes, as too many of these songs sound alike and lack those really killer hooks that pulverize you but kept you coming back for more, something which the Florida legends were so good at.
Skeletal Remains have a ton of talent, and once they start to refine their songwriting skills I can see them being a huge player on the death metal scene. A band to keep an eye on for sure.
