From the Netherlands comes Grand Surpreme Blood Court, somewhat of an old-school death metal super group with members who also spend time in Asphyx, Pestilence, and Hail of Bullets. Bow Down Before the Blood Court is their debut for Century Media, and it's no frills, punishing, vintage styled death metal. As if they are giving the finger to all the 'core related bands out there, as well as those into the more technical aspects of the genre, Grand Surpreme Blood Court might have delivered an album here that's a bit out of touch with modern extreme metal fans, but there's no denying the power of a track like "Veredictum Sanguis", which is just punishing, grueling, old school death metal for all those who remember what that's all about. The riffs throughout the album are brutal enough, the drum work relentless, and the vocals steeped in the early '90s. Nothing groundbreaking mind you, but I think that was the point. Eric Daniels' signature guitar style is all over this album, so if you are a fan of all those early Asphyx releases, look for plenty of his surging riffs and crazy whammy bar solos here.
There's a certain charm to Bow Down Before the Blood Court that you don't get with a lot of modern day death metal releases, but at the same time there's not much being offered here that hasn't been done to death over the last 20 years. It's just good, solid old school death metal, nothing more, nothing less.
