Mammoth Mammoth: Vol. III Hell's Likely

Mammoth Mammoth are an Australian hard rock/metal band who are looking to let the world know that their country has much more to offer than just AC/DC and Wolfmother. Their latest release on Napalm Records, Vol. III Hell's Likely actually has more in common with the latter, as Mammoth Mammoth's music does touch on '70s styled stoner & hard rock grooves, but there's also a strong classic punk feel here in spots that sets them apart from both those Australian heavyweights.

"Bare Bones" is a prime example of that furious punk attitude, but elsewhere you will find plenty of crunchy biker rock, such as "(Up All Night) Demons to Fight" and "Hell's Likey", seemingly a head-on-collision between the MC5, Steppenworlf, and Danzig. "Sittin' Pretty" even channels The Stooges a bit, while "Bury Me" tosses in some punkish vocals amidst thunderous Black Sabbath styled riffs. Other tracks like "Let's Roll", "Another Drink", lumber along with as much subtlety as Fu Manchu, Boris, and The Ramones.

You have to give credit to Mammoth Mammoth for really duplicating the sound of an era long since gone, and for that alone Vol. III Hell's Likely is a fun and enjoyable winner. Anyone into the early heavy rock & punk sounds of the '70s should find lots to like here.
