Clamfight: I Versus the Glacier
The first thing to do with this album is to play track number eight, "The Green Gods of Yag," repeatedly and at a very loud volume. It's an instrumental track, so don't expect any vocals. Don't worry, though; the other tracks have plenty of vocal power. The only requirement, for now, is to forget about everything else and just listen; soak in the power of the riff, the sweet, unobtrusive pounding of the drums, and the distorted crispness of the bass. If you are one of those listeners that like heavy music that knows where to find that sweet spot right at the core of sludge, doom, and stoner metal, you've come to the right place.
Clamfight is one of those bands that understand how to take the simplest of riffs and turn them into sheer musical delight. The best tracks on this album, "Sandriders," "I vs. the Glacier," "Age of Reptiles," and "Mountain" offer listeners superb examples of what makes stoner / sludge / doom metal such a fun approach to heavy music. Check out, for example, the instrumental bridge and guitar solo in "Shadow Line" for one example of the sheer sonic strength these guys bring to their music.
Riff-centered heavy music is alive and well. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out. Check out the cool album art, too. Magical horses and Viking Chicks have never looked so cool.
