Delusion Squared: II

This is DS follow up to their self-titled 2010 debut album, which was one of my favorites of that year. It was a great surprise, as was this release. Yeh, I need to update that watch list.

Delusion Squared is highlighted by the excellent vocals of Lorraine Young, who also plays guitars. The other players in the band are Steve Francis, who plays guitars, drums, and keyboards; and Emmanuel de Saint Meen, who plays bass and keyboards.

This second album is another part of the story set up with the debut album. If you missed the first album you should go back and get the debut, to hear the words set to wonderful music. Both stories can be found from the band's website though.

Hearing Young's voice really is worth the price of admission, but the music and developing story are well planned and performed. Plenty of excellent long guitar chords and notes, set within intricate keyboard melodies and effects. Background sound effects help bring the story to life.

The opening keyboard riff, after the sound effects on "Necrogenesis" is a great bonus gift for purchasing the CD. It really is original and one of the best stand-alone keyboard riffs I've heard since that cool synth/keyboard effect from Phideaux's "Snowtorch - Part II".

"Vertical Paradox", with its beautiful piano and Young's angelic vocal make it the best track on the album.

The soft acoustic guitar work on tracks like "Revelation", "Abduction", "Naked Solipsism", and "Unexpected Messiah" are also major standouts on an album full of excellent music without fillers. The keyboards throughout this album are another gift to treasure.

This is a great modern example of a band taking the best from the past and giving it a new coat of paint. Get the two discs and enjoy a modern story set to excellent prog music.
