Indomite: Theater of Time

According to their band biography, Indomite was less the result of a bunch of childhood friends trying to become rock stars as it is a collection of like-minded people wanting to press the limits of heavy music in new and interesting directions. They've been working hard since 2009 to develop their sound into the blend of melodic, traditional, and progressive metal we hear on this, their debut album. I don't think this album lives up to its ambitions--after all, these guys are trying to create that ever-elusive "epic" sound--but it does convince me that these guys have the talent and the chops to go places if they keep at it. What they need to do now is tour like crazy, attract more and more fans, and let the magic happen, if it happens. This is a good release, but it isn't enough on its own to attract the attention they need to make it.

The songs on this album are mostly drawn from large and broad themes like power, religion, and human ambition. There's a little bit of an Iron Maiden-like vibe going on here at times, particularly in the vocals. They also remind me a little bit of Fates Warning, but only in places. The stronger tracks include "Pharaoh" and "Parasite (Symbiotic)." I thought the other tracks were pretty good, but "Sky High" didn't quite work for me, particularly the quiet vocal passage in the middle of the song. The lead singer has a pretty good voice, but doesn't quite work when he's trying to be more sensitive or intimate. He sounds better when he's singing loud, anthemic choruses, but his articulation in the verses is sometimes weak. I also don't think that bands like this do well to write songs that are so long. I understand that desire to be expansive, epic even, but it never hurt anyone to figure out ways to be concise, tight, along the way.
