Cpt. Kronos are a four piece doom/stoner act from Helsinki, Finland, and The Invocation is their debut EP, which features four songs drawing from influences such as Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Rainbow. Well, you can certainly hear bits of Electric Wizard, Sabbath and the boys from Vitus throughout The Invocation, as there are plenty of slow, crushing riffs to be had here, though the lead vocals are more prominent in the mix and I would have liked the guitars to have a tad more distortion to them. A tune like "A Criminal Mind" might have had a little more power had their been more of a crunch factor, but instead the band go for a more bluesier take, which honestly isn't that bad. "State of Emptiness" really works well, as they crank up the distortion and add some wah-wah to the riffs for a really fun retro doom trip. The same can be said for the title track, a really successful and heavy song that will surely please fans of '70s styled hard rock and doom. All in all, this is pretty decent stuff, though I'm sure with a bit more seasoning this band will really start to hit their stride.
