Sweden's Egonaut are set to follow up their fine debut Electric with the equally strong effort Mount Egonaut, another slab of heavy stoner & '70s styled hard rock grooves. No surprise given the fact that they reside on Transubstans Records/Record Heaven, the home for many kick ass Scandinavian acts doing the retro thing. Mount Egonaut packs plenty of punch, featuring 10 songs filled with tasty, crunchy riffs, powerful vocals, raging Hammond organ, and a wealth of attitude.
Once you get into the first two tracks "Crawl" and "Kneel or Bleed", you know that a wild ride is going to be had. "Wasted Days" knocks you over the head with blistering guitar and equally potent organ, while the lead vocals have a similar snarl like James Hetfield from Metallica. The riff-groove-stomp formula of "Awake" is very addicting (also love that swirling Hammond lurking in the background), and the furious "Cursed And Damned" is like a fun mix of Metallica, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Favorite track though just might be the groove laden but crushingly heavy "The Fight", complete with a riff that's like the bastard child of Sabbath's "Children of the Grave". And if that wasn't enough to entice you to check out this CD, "Loser" is one barnburner of a guitar/organ freakout, and could have easily fit right in on Purple's In Rock album. Mount Egonaut starts out strong and just gets stronger as you get to the back end of the CD, closing off with two crushers in "Careless Awareless" and "Palliation", each one a heavy rock gem complete with bruising guitar & organ riffs and potent vocals.
This is heavy, raunchy, headbanging stuff here for anyone who loves '70s hard rock, doom, stoner, and classic heavy metal. Transubstans has once again delivered a winner here with Egonaut, and this band will find themselves in good company on a roster that already includes the stellar acts like Captain Crimson, Three Seasons, Thalamus, Gin Lady, and so many other solid bands just waiting to be discovered by the masses.
