Wartorn: Iconic Nightmare

It's always good to hear a strong blend of punk, hardcore, and crust; it's even better is when the music is performed with strength, talent and energy. Simply put, Iconic Nightmare is a strong release offering listeners a short but powerful body of songs that will leave them breathless, but hoping for yet another song, another encore. Sure, these songs don't try anything new, but I doubt anyone will complain. The nature of punk-infused music, after all, thrives on the perfect combination of simplicity and ambition, the push toward the musical expression of modern day frustration, worry, and anger. Rather than establish meaning figuratively, punk thrives on directness, plain speaking, and open confrontation. In this case, the songs turn to the political and social problems and fears that permeate the daily news.

Here's what to expect: nine aggressive, politically charged songs, driving and blistering drums, riffs dirtied with distortion, and anguished, angry singing. I realize my description could apply to any number of releases, but the formula works so well here that I don't mind. Heavy music, after all, still bears the family resemblance of its first parents. For those looking to get a sense of what these guys do best, I'd suggest listening to "Iconic Nightmare," "No Sanctuary No Salvation," and "Betrayal." This is a solid new release from a promising new band. Highly recommended.
