Heimdall: Aeneid

I do like my power metal and there is such a wealth of exciting material out there to be found both old and new. When you are fortunate enough to come across something that really hits the spot just like this one it's especially good. This splendid power metal comes from the European metal group Heimdall on Aeneid their new concept album that tells of "an epic journey from the fall of Troy to the birth of the new State that later became Rome."

Besides power Heimdall effectively combines classic, symphonic and speed metal into such an alluring gathering of fine songs. Vocals haven't been forgotten, as Heimdall features a great deal of input in that key department offering quite a combination including an imposing choir adding to the epic feel of this tale and their lead vocalist can soar with the best of them. Heimdall's guitarists go all out to impress which they do with riveting riffs and thrilling solos and the keyboards also add a wealth of appeal.

Those seeking speed in their metal wont be disappointed as co-founder and drummer Nicolas Calluori's furious double kicks ignite "Forced By Fate", as Aeneid starts out on a high and remains there for the duration. "Save You" and "Waiting For The Dawn" offer more fine metal while "Ballad Of The Queen" is just as the name suggests. There is so much more entrancing material and the quality doesn't diminish. This is a concept album but I am so swept up in this release that I have yet to sit back and follow the story, though that would be far easier if I had the lyrics to read along with hence why I haven't covered that side to the album.

Hemidall bring the past and present together, their music sounds vibrant and fresh, and I can see fans of Thy Majestie and other great epic power metal acts totally getting into this truly impressive new album. Many years have passed since Hemdall's last release in 2004 and the band sound like they never stopped performing, as Aeneid is that good.
