I Lied: World Insane

I Lied are a finnish death metal act who released the EP World Insane independently in 2011 but it's recently been picked up and officially put out by Violent Journey Records. There's nothing here that you haven't heard a million times already by any number of death metal acts, but that being said, I Lied do have some chops and these songs are more than serviceable enough. Plenty of intricate riffs on "Total Self Hatred", and "Lizard Dreams" has some crushing arrangements and galloping rhythms that are like a cross between Iron Maiden and vintage In Flames, plus a fun mix of death & black metal vocal styles. The main problem throughout World Insane is that the band are for the most part sticking too close to the In Flames/Dark Tranquility/At the Gates formula for my taste, and while it certainly is done quite competently, I'd almost rather go grab my copy of Colony or Whoracle and really listen to something innovative.
