Coma: Don't Set Your Dogs On Me
 Coma are Poland's leading exponents of alternative modern rock, this latest effort Don't Set Your Dogs On Me being their sixth album to date although only the second to be sung entirely in English. Think of an Eastern European answer to Soil, Theory Of A Deadman or Shinedown and you won't be too far away from their (admittedly quite diverse) style with plenty of insistent melody but also an unmistakable quirkiness that European bands do so well. Slightly accented vocals, some throbbing bass lines and guitars that run the whole spectrum from light acoustic whimsy to precision riffing all makes for a varied musical journey that, added to the undeniable commercial edge, should give Coma the opportunity to break out of their homeland and come to the attention of a wider audience. 'Keep The Peace', 'With You' and 'Dance With A Queen' are the highlights across what is a refreshingly vibrant and enjoyable album.

Coma: Don't Set Your Dogs On Me

In their home country of Poland Coma have achieved a good deal of success. They have had several number one hits in the single and album charts as well as gold and platinum awards. The band has won several "Fryderk Awards" (the Polish equivalent of The Brit Awards or, I imagine the Grammys) in the categories "Best Album"and "Best Band." Every year they play over 100 sold out shows and have been special guests for artists like Pearl Jam, Linkin Park and Tool.
Why is it then that I'm so underwhelmed by Don't Set Your Dogs on Me? I very much like the middle of the album, the guitar fury of "Rainy Song", "Late" with its grunge-like tones and the lengthy more experimental "Lion" are all pretty good but the rest of the record is just unmemorable. It is all fine and a pleasant way to pass the time but five minutes later there's just…nothing. Perhaps Don't Set Your Dogs on Me is a grower but after a few weeks with it its presence hasn't grown very much on me.
