By The Patient: Premonitions
OK, detective work done (seriously, sending out promos with no cover sheet, no case or sleeve, just a rubbery round thingmegig to affix the disc with, stuck to a mock up of the album cover that doesn't actually feature the band name.....?) and I've discovered that the nameless band on Deathbound Records releasing Premonitions is By The Patient. Were my efforts worth the time, blood, sweat and beers spent? Well actually they were, with this Danish death metal cacophony grinding and gnashing mightily. Some might say traditionally - and they'd be correct - but as with all genres, when the basics are done well, the results are worthy of attention. So if something that thunders along with layered and reasonably restrained gargled (rather than growled) vocals, ultra solid guitar work tied to drums of pummelling doom and a thick, infectious production gets your greasy hair all a blur, then By The Patient will have you convulsing convincingly.
Think along the lines of say, Dark Tranquility and you'll have a pretty strong picture of what BTP are aiming for with Premonitions, for this is no holds barred, in your face, unpretentious metal. However through their completely believable aggression and dense atmosphere, By The Patient never leave the likes of "All Is Vaild", "Enes", or "Veil Of Depression" sounding anything other than brutally fresh. As ever in this genre, if the throat assaults and fret explosions don't leave you reeling, or if the bass doesn't pin you to the floor as the drums flatten you beyond belief, then the results won't have you paying full attention like a dog waiting to be told to "fetch". However from the off your ear's are pricked, your eyes stuck to the prize and your focus never waning. Yes, as with almost every band these days, there's no denying that a good dose of influences, ideas and sounds utilised here show more than a little sign of prior use, but not in a way that cries stop, thief!
A more than solid statement from By The Patient demonstrates and band that deserve your attention - and to have their name on the cover of their album. Surely with Premonitions they saw that coming....?
