Scent of Death are a technical death metal band from Spain, and their latest offering of brutality comes in the form of Of Martyr's Agony and Hate. With their obvious love for Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Morbid Angel, and Behemoth clearly on display, Scent of Death aren't going to win any awards for originality, but there's no denying the talent these guys possess, and Of Martyr's Agony and Hate as a result is a pretty potent release.
If you're into technical death metal, there's no shortage of pummeling riffs that twist and weave around the mix, and the jackhammer drumming and evil growls are simply the icing on the cake. Though it's a slightly short release by most standards at just under 40 minutes, with tracks like "Ego Te Provoco", "Awakening of the Liar", and the absolutely crushing " A Simple Twist of Fate", it's hard to ignore the power on display as well as the impressive musicianship. They even throw in a tasty instrumental called "The Sleeper Must Awake" to show that they can reel in the brutality when they want to, which is a nice touch. Overall, pretty good stuff, and again, not the most original death metal album you'll hear, and a few tracks kind of have that 'sameyness' going on, but an impressive band that I'll be keeping my eye on.
