Juggernaught: Bring the Meat Back
Bring the Meat Back may well be one of the least sophisticated albums I've ever heard. Lyrically the preoccupation with fat asses gets a tad grating after a while. The bands' fans describes their musi as, "Man Rock," and there is a decidedly beefy aspect to their work. Juggernaught hail from South Africa but sound very much like they come from the southern states of the USA. Some of the guitar work in the title track is Skynyrd-like and there are traces of Alabama Thunderpussy in the rest of their work. "Train" even sounds like Ted Nugent's "Free for All" to these ears whilst the near instrumental "Wors" is one of the more whacky things I've heard for quite a while .
Comprising Herman le Roux - guitars, vocals, organs & synth, Jovan Tutunovic - guitars & vocals with Angilo Boobyman Wijnbergen – bass and Alexis Schofield - drums & percussion, Juggernaught plan to expand their horizons throughout Southern Africa in 2013. There's no reason why they can't make it further abroad as bluesy classic rock style is universal and should travel well.

Juggernaught: Bring the Meat Back Posted by Steven Reid, SoT Staff Writer on 2013-03-22 17:02:46 My Score:
Look closely and you'll find that there is a strong underground metal and rock scene developing in South Africa and while Juggernaut would appear to want to move to the American Deep South to ply their Southern Metal trade, their second album Bring The Meat Back almost falls a little too close to parody to make the mark it often threatens. Rough and ready vocals from Herman Le Roux are one of the main issues, with his almost evangelical delivery taking things a little too close to Jack Black, Tenacious D territory, but when allayed to a sound that is too thin and weedy to carry his ultra macho voice, then Juggernaut actually sound more like Camper-van. Harsh maybe, but listen to "The Storm", or "Booty Call" and the sheer simplicity of what is being attempted here just begins to grate on the nerves. Add to that lyrics that refer to "bringing the cock and balls when she needs it bad" as "Booty Call" does and it all too often becomes far too much like hard work to take this thoroughly tongue in cheekness seriously.
Does that make me a killjoy? Maybe so, but for parody to work, the laughs need to be more knowing, instead this all sounds frighteningly earnest and not a little beyond daft and into plain stupid. Something made all the more disappointing from the fact that there's no doubt that these guys can offer up a style that could and should hit harder than the current, "aren't we clever? Wink-wink nonsense" allows for.
Neither interesting enough musically to rise above the daftness, nor daft enough to shine through the musical simplicity, Juggernaut seem to have misjudged exactly what and where they are aiming, resulting in an album that while entertaining on its first run through, has a decidedly short shelf life.
Bring The Meat Back? Nah, I think I'd rather go hungry...
