Retrospective: Lost in Perception
'Retrospective' was formed in 2005 by Robert Kusik. They are a Polish band from Leszno. They are mainly a progressive rock band in the vein of Porcupine Tree. The band is made up of Jakub Roszak, on vocal; Beata Łagoda, on keyboard and vocal; Maciej Klimek, on guitar; Łukasz Marszałek, on bass; Robert Kusik, on drums; and Alan Szczepaniak, on guitar.
The music is dark and mysterious like Porky Tree or Steve Wilson. Roszak's vocals have no real close comparison I can remember, which helps give definition to the band's sound, and creates an original feel to everything they do on this album. When Łagoda joins him, in support, with her vocals it adds measurably to the sound.
A track with the title, 'The End of the Winter Lethargy', especially towards the end of February, when I am reviewing this album, makes it one of the best tracks on the album. Great title and the music fits so well.
'Lunch" has a very Pink Floyd, slow guitar rhythm that makes it one of the best tracks. It is also an instrumental tour de force for all members to express their talents.
'Tomorrow Will Change' opens with a cool Spaghetti Western rhythm and melody to it. Another of the best tracks on the album.
'Musical Land' has a fantastic drum opening, before the guitar rhythm takes over.
'Ocean of a Little Thoughts' opens with a cool acoustic guitar, and Łagoda is back to balance out the vocals. She is given more space to express her talents.
'Swallow the Green Tones' is an excellent title, and the keyboards that open this track make it the best on the album. The guitar work, reminiscent of Steve Miller's 'Fly Like an Eagle' at times, and then Pink Floyd's 'Wishing', make this a killer epic closing track. Roszak delivers his best vocals. Throughout the album he has a vocal similarity to Layne Staley, without the volume. More subdued. Łagoda is back; unfortunately she is in support and not the lead singer.
Great slow, dark music delivered with professionalism. If Beata Łagoda takes over the lead vocals…I'll be back for the next album.
