You know you are in for something different when a CD comes in an environmentally safe package consisting of 100% recycled cardboard made with 20% consumer waste (all of which is explained in depth on the back cover.) Actually this project is kind of a partnership between Emigre Magazine, an arts and design publication, and the band Honey Barbara, a weird, modern sounding take on the styles of David Bowie, Roxy Music, Talking Heads, and King Crimson.
After a few spins, it's obvious that are some interesting things going on here, such as the quirky vocals, ethnic percussion, and jagged guitar loops. The problem is that with seventeen songs and little variation in mood or tempo, most of the songs tend to sound the same after a while. At times I just wished the band would just break out and let it rip a bit, but they seem to be content to tread a constant drone throughout. The lyrics are at times quite silly, but make for an amusing read as the music lulls you into a hypnotic trance.
While not really a perfect fit for many of our readers, I am sure that this might interest some whose tastes includes the bands mentioned above, and like a modern take on psychedelia.
