Altaar: Altaar

Altaar are a Norwegian alternative heavy metal band. Their press release mentions they are borrowing on some of the talents of past heavy metal greats such as Black Sabbath, as well as the psychedelic period of Pink Floyd.

Espen T. Hangård – guitar, synth, vocals

Kenneth Lamond – drums

Their debut consists of just two tracks "Tidi Kjem Aldri Att" which clocks in at 19:59 and "Dei Absolutte Krav Og Den Absolutte Nade" which goes on for 14:14. Both tracks take an avant-garde approach to musical direction, meaning simply if you are looking for any hooks or melodies you've come to the wrong place.

Most of the sounds to me are slightly reminiscent of the title track from Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secrets (Although the Floyd never disturbed me as much as any of this stuff). The vocals on the second track which show up around the four minute mark allow the lead singer the chance to get a bit of his issues out (Deep gravely sounds with numerous references to death, etc.)

I'm sure there is a fan base for bands like this, sounds that give the listener the opportunity to take their own trip and to create their own images as they sit back, headphones on and just drift away for a while.

For me…not so much
