Just prior to the Allman Brothers Band reforming at the start of the 1990's, lead vocalist/keyboard player Gregg Allman was enjoying a successful solo career, with his album I'm No Angel being a big hit and sparking plenty of sold out concerts around the world. I'm No Angel-Live on Stage was filmed in November 1988 at The Cannery in Nashville, Tennessee and features Allman's solo band that included former Allman Brothers Band members Dan Toler (guitar) and David Toler (drums) as well as Bruce Waibel (bass), Tim Heding (keyboards) and Charles "Chaz" Trippy (percussion).
Though this DVD is listed as a full show, the running time is less than an hour, and with the perfomance being as good as it is the viewer will be left wanting more. The video quality is disappointing, being quite grainy and blurry at times, which is sad considering I've seen DVDs of shows much older than this one with better quality. Sound-wise though it's decent, especially the 5.1 surround mix. Throughout the whole set, one can't help but be glued to one 'Dangerous' Dan Toler, the veteran guitarist who just recently passed away unexpectedly, ironically not long after the release of this DVD. His playing is spectacular here, lending lyrical, blistering solos to classic ABB tunes like "Don't Want You No More", "It's My Cross to Bear", "One Way Out", and "Statesboro Blues", as well as shining on Gregg's solo pieces "Just Before the Bullets Fly", "Slip Away", and "I'm No Angel". Mr. Allman is also in fine form, his vocals strong and confident and those always tasty Hammond organ lines ever present.
Despite the lackluster video quality, this is a very good but short set, a a reminder of just how great a guitar player Dan Toler was. RIP Dangerous Dan, we'll miss ya!
