Antichrist is the new release from singer Karlage King, who has a revolving door band by the name of The King's Band. By 'revolving door', what we are talking about is that King writes all the songs and provides vocals, and uses whatever musicians are available to record at that time for the sessions. It's pretty obvious from listening to Antichrist that King worships all things '80s glam & hair metal, as much of the album is steeped in influences from Guns 'n' Roses, Skid Row, Motley Crue, and Poison, but some of the guitar work at times has a certain NWOBHM feel to it. Tunes like "Sex After Night", "Radio Hell", and "You Are My Bitch" are somewhat catchy, complete with raunchy guitar riffs and King's high pitched vocals. I'm on the fence when it comes to his vocals; he's obviously channeled that era quite well, but at times he's just 'too high pitched', sounding like Axel Rose if someone was squeezing his testicles. You have to give him credit for his exuberance however, as he sounds totally into this and I'm all for someone who has dedication to his craft. Thankfully, there are mostly uptempo rockers here, so if you like the heavier fare of the '80s glam metal scene (and not the sappy ballads) there's lots to sink your teeth into here, like the galloping "Death or Glory" or the epic punk/metal of "Trip in the Afterlife ".
If you grew up enjoying the sounds of the '80s metal scene, The King's Band might just be an act worth checking into.
