Devils Whorehouse: Revelation Unorthodox

You like your metal raw and head-bangin' simple? This is your album.

There is nothing imaginative, progressive or melodic about Revelation Unorthodox. There are few instrumental passages, there's not a guitar solo to be heard and there are no keyboards to add texture or sophistication. What you'll hear are simple riffs played hard and raw, and gruff singing that makes Hetfield sound like a lark. This is your back-to-basics no-frills-attached raw metal.

Revelation Unorthodox is the first full-length CD by the Swedish foursome, who wrote the record as a tribute to classic horror flicks. The lyrics and the mood support that theme – with subject matter like monsters, the glorification of imminent death, sex and bondage. The band's name and some of the track names testify to the band's giving glory to the gory: "Bondage Goddess", "Erotikill", "Blood Nymphoman", and so on. And with just two exceptions, except for the titles, you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the songs. This is not death metal and there isn't a single grunt or growl, although the chord progressions and the heaviness are borrowed from that genre. You might call it heavy grungey punk, or black horror metal or, like the band, you could call it punk death rock. Either way – you're probably getting the picture.

There are 13 songs running from less than 1½ minutes to a comparative epic clocking nearly 6 minutes, and the whole CD spins for a mere 36 minutes.

You can imagine a smoky clubful of tattooed and pierced, leather-and-chain clad teens and twenty-and-a-bits moshing to this album in a head-banging frenzy.
