We've followed the career of US extreme metal act Lecherous Nocturne for a while now, and it's been pretty clear of just how talented this band is right from the start. However, what is even more clear is that their latest slab of brutality for Unique Leader, Behold Almighty Doctrine, is their strongest effort to date. This is some sick, twisted, brutal, and technical mayhem for sure, a boiling miasma of crushing death metal, raging black metal, and complex as hell proggy/tech-death/grind insanity.
Most of the tunes here on Behold Almighty Doctrine are fairly short, so they start, kick your ass, and get the hell out before you even know what hit you. Chris Lollis is all over the place with his mix of deep brutal growls, broken glass ravaged screams, and high pitched evil wailings, heard to great effect on the raging "Those Having Been Hidden Away" and the absolutely crushing "Ouroboros Chains". Drummer Alex Lancia just obliterates his kit throughout this set, and the churning, intricate riffs and lead lines of guitar duo Ethan Lane & Kreishloff and bassist James O'Neal just kill on each and every tune. Just listen to the rampaging "Lesions from Vicious Plague", a tune that is just so damn brutal & technical it's simply mindblowing. Things don't let up on "Caustic Vertigo" or "Creation Continuum" either, two great examples of just how awesome well crafted technical death metal can be.
My only complain here is that I wish the album was longer and the band gave us another song in place of the three short instrumental interludes, which just come across as filler. If you crave technical extreme metal, Behold Almighty Doctrine is a must hear, and one of the strongest releases of its kind I have heard here in the early part of 2013.
