Call of the Void: Dragged Down a Dead End Path
Sometimes, I think that metal albums will need to come with a disclaimer saying that no nuns, priests, or goats were harmed in the making of the music. The cover on this one shows three skeletal nuns looking at the viewer, the closest one holding up a hand wrapped in a cloth or a bandage. It's a dark and haunting image. Are these a group of undead nuns? What are they doing?
Musically, Call of the Void is aggressive and heavy. They sound like a doom band crossed with something approaching punk. It isn't quite grindcore nor is it stoner metal. It's more like assault metal, a driving and aggressive punch in the face. For a debut album, Dragged Down a Dead End Path has the advantage of being all about power. From start to finish, this album moves quickly through a series of blistering songs that seem perfectly suited for the stage (and the moshing fans). They aren't fast songs, but they are relatively short. The album clocks in at barely thirty minutes. Normally, I would probably ask for a little more music (or a little more length) but I think this album is just long enough. It's like a really solid gig, one that leaves audiences wanting more.
