There seems to never be a shortage of new electronic/ambient music coming out these days, most of which pay homage to the great Tangerine Dream. DreamLand is no exception to that statement, and in fact Underwater is a fine take on the early period of Tangerine Dream, done up with modern instruments and recording technology. As the title of the CD indicates, expect considerable amounts of atmosphere, space and depth, all characteristics of the planets great oceans and bodies of water.
DreamLand consists of James Sidlo on guitars and loops, and Johnny Rodriguez on keyboards, flutes and spoken vocals. Both gentlemen are also affiliated with the modern psychedelic band Honey Barbara. Consisting of four extended pieces, the CD is chock full of huge synthesizer washes and echoed guitar soundscapes. Sidlo makes great use of loops as well, which pop in and out of the mix with common regularity. The five-part suite titled “Underwater” is the most adventurous, featuring haunting synth and piano, as well as a great sense of building tension. As in some of the more famous electronic releases over the years, the goal here was probably to create an intense atmosphere through spacey and ominous sounds, and the band really made it work. Those looking for a break from metal or prog might want to check this out and experience what being below the depths in musical terms sounds like.
