Most of you regular readers of Sea of Tranquility know I've long been a fan of brutal, technical death metal. One look at the cover artwork of Across the Nature's Stillness and you no doubt can anticipate just that on the latest release from French extreme metal act Demented. Can these guys deliver music as instrumentally stimulating as bands such as Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Decapitated, Nile, or Cannibal Corpse and still make the overall effect brutal as all hell? Well yeah, pretty much so.
Klonosphere Records did a fine job scooping Demented up for their roster. While Across the Nature's Stillness certainly won't set the world on fire with originality and change the scope of the technical death metal scene, it's a brutal and highly enjoyable platter of raging sounds in its own right. Tracks like "On the Edge", the raging "Shaman", and the sheer complexity of the manic "Spirits" are enough to reel in any fan of challenging extreme metal, while "Psycho Pomp" blends pummeling death metal with almost jazzy drum, bass, & lead guitar passages for a wild ride. The more straighforward "The Ceremony" features some crushing, old school style riffs and well done growls, while "Light From the Stars" is a trip into churning, blast beat hell, complete with epic keyboards and mountains of behemoth riffs.
The growing French extreme metal scene shows no signs of slowing down, as this latest from Demented clearly demonstrates. Anyone can easily hear the great potential in this band after digging into this CD, so it will be interesting to follow them as they continue on towards death metal dominance.
