Low Man: Low Man
Another day, another sub-genre, as Pittsburgh four-piece Low Man announce themselves as Stoner Punk. And you know what? They are! Low slung riffs that dredge the sludge somehow jump around with a shit-kicking attitude and bags of gritty, serious fun. It's an odd mix, but Low Man make it work. The snappily titled "American Literature From 1860" attacks at pace and leaves a strong impression through huge grooves, smart snare smacks and shouty vocals. It is big, heavy, yet light on its feet and bags of fun.
Basically that's it, with the other five songs on this self titled EP using the same ideals to make an equally memorable mark that sits squarely between serious brow furrowing and throwaway knock it out fun. "Migraine" leaves you feeling uplifted rather than under the weather, while "Pay The Bills" does exactly that, while leaving you change for beer. "Golden Dawn" to be fair eschews the punkiness for more stoner and "Roll The River Down" decides to stray into almost doom territory, before a pointless (and needless) hidden track of feedback and guitar noise goes a long way to undoing the good work done before. Why?
As far as I can tell Low Man have only released a two track single prior to this EP and if that's the case, then it makes for a rather assured beginning. Either way this is a band who know where they're headed, and it sure will be fun watching them get there.
