Look at these ingredients: Female fronted death metal. A multicultural lineup. Most of the artists are classically trained. The band has a discography of 4 albums on which they cut their teeth refined their art. On paper, this record has immense potential. In practice, it is an above-average middle-of-the-road death metal outfit with some interesting sounds and lots of mid-tempo sludge.
Crisis is a 5-piece band fronted by petit Karyn Crisis, with a voice that can run from angelic to demonic and back again in the space of just three bars. Her vocals recall the late Dawn Crosby of Fear Of God, and unlike Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow Karyn does not attempt to emulate the classic male-dominated death sound. She is joined by an American, a Taiwanese, a Pakistani and a Puerto Rican. Only occasionally is that rich ethnic mix apparent on Like Sheep Led To Slaughter. Instead we have a mix of doom and death metal, heavy and oppressive as hell and borderline evil, with songs titled "A Graveyard For Bitches", "Study In Cancer" and "Corpus Apocalypse". "Rats In A Maze" is probably the strongest track here and summarizes the theme of the whole album.
Recommended for the truly hardcore death metal fan. Not recommended for impressionable children, little old ladies or symphonic progressive rock fans. The rest should approach with caution – go to the band's web site and try before you buy.
