Nightbitch is a Connecticut-based metal band, primarily driven by a love for Danzig and a fascination with 70s flavored occult cinema. 70s trash culture is, with all its sleaze, graphic explicitness, and scary psychedelia definitely a perfect source for Danzig-driven heavy metal, and Nightbitch - featuring guitarist Ryan Adams, known from the black metal act Ipsissimus, and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor from the stoner metal act Treebeard - seize this to the fullest on theChainmaker-EP.
The opening track 'Chainmaker'is a piece of Danzig-worship which borders on being outright Danzig-plagiarism, to the point that - if one didn't know better - one might think that it was actually Glenn Danzig himself doing the singing. Under other circumstances, such plagiarism would be unfrgivable and condemned as mere rip-of. However, when done as overtly deliberately and totally convincingly as Nightbitch do on this track, it becomes awesome. And, in a way, if one were to intellectualize it a bit, 'Chainmaker' might be described as an example of the principles of exploitation cinema applied to music.
'Disrober' starts out dark and doomy, but soon morphs into an awesomely groovy affair, from which occult darkness emanates like the smoke from the bong shared by a group of Italian film-makers working late at night on a b-movie script in 1976. There is more of a Jim Morrison feel to Taylor's vocals here (not surprisingly, since Glenn Danzig himself has always had a Morrison feel to his voice). And, man, the groovy riffs in this song are so damn awesome that they're going to be hard to beat.
To top off the groovefest, Nightbitch close the EP with the perhaps most groovy Deep Purple track - and definitely one of my favorite Deep Purple songs - namely, 'Into the Fire', which is brilliantly executed on all accounts.
Occult Danzig-worship, Nightbitch's Chainmaker is a groovefest of dark and simple, but bloody good, hard rocking old school heavy metal. And fans of metal as it used to be are bound to enjoy it for what it is.
