U. Pasanen Band: Grey House

U. Pasanen Band was founded in 1997 by famous Finnish guitar hero Seppo "Ukko" Pasanen. Ukko Pasanen has played the blues for over thirty years and he is one of the most respected blues guitar players in Finland, however, this is my first encounter with his work. Joining Pasanen on the album are Joonas Pasanen – Guitar, Juha-Antti Helama – Bass, Asko Vikki – Drums, Harri Häkkinen – Vocals with additional musicians: Antti Kettunen – Saxophones, Vesa Rahkama – Trumpet and Jyrki Lindlöf - Clavinet, Hammond, Piano, Rhodes., Together they make a very pleasant noise.

It's often very easy to say something along the lines of, "if you like Robert Cray, you'll like this," but I actually am going to say it. From the road-weary "No Band Without The Van" to "Let's Not Let It Fade" ("mountaaaaaains..") to the slide opening of "No Regrets" all the way to the title track the listener is presented to eleven succinct, classy and tasteful pieces of contemporary blues which are nicely satisfying and prove that a) the blues can be exceptionally uplifting and b) anyone can get them even in the frozen north!
