Dynamo Bliss: Poplar Music
Swedish art proggers Dynamo Bliss return with Poplar Music, their first album since 21st Century Junk from 2010. The band consists of Mikael Sandström (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, banjo, accordion, pedal steel) together with brothers Stefan Olofsson (vocals, keyboards, zither, guitar, bass, percussion) and Peter Olofsson (drums). As you will have guessed from the list of instruments used they offer something of an offbeat and eclectic mix; the quirky trio quite comfortably incorporating the sound of banjos, accordions and pedal steel to nestle alongside their ELO / 10cc inspired sense of commerciality. It is some of the lightweight pop moments of the aforementioned that really hit home on the harmony drenched "Can You Hear The Sound" and "Running Out Of Mind" but Dynamo Bliss are not afraid to experiment. The banjo is at the forefront of "Over The Rolling Hills" and when mixed with the upbeat chorus and insistent melody makes for an appealing highlight.
Poplar Music is an album that is well worth a listen from a band that bring a fresh and diverse approach to their vintage sounding pop-prog crossover style.
