Coffeen, The: You Must be Certain of the Coffeen

I can't tell exactly what impression I'm supposed to get from this album. The name of the band blends coffee and coffin and the cover shows a coffin with a coffee pot design on it. I realize the band is probably playing around with Gothic imagery here, but I don't understand the point.

The music only makes things worse. I realize there's a sense of humor at play here, but the band constantly gets the timing wrong for that crucial punchline moment. The best thing about this album is the way the riffs make generous use of a warm, distorted sound. Nevertheless, the music is generally weak and often uninteresting. I was especially disappointed with the lyrical content on this album; from track to track it ranged from the mildly Gothic to the expressly silly. I was especially disappointed with "The Coffeen," a track that makes far too much of the phrase "Italians do it better." Honestly, I think the song may be about Italian coffee, not exactly a top pick for metal tunes. My advice: skip this one and find a better beverage.

2. FistFuck Rising
