Gory Blister: Gory Blister Live "RAW"

I don't know how popular Gory Blister is outside of their native Italy. Here in the United States, at least in my experience, they don't come up in conversation; I've never heard their music on the radio, nor have I heard them discussed on metal websites or in magazines. That's a shame. These guys are actually pretty awesome. I've been going through some of their back catalogue over the last little while and I'm really impressed with the way they bring energy and originality to that small field known as technical death metal.

There's a reason for the quality of their contribution. These guys have been going at it since 1991, honing their craft in that first generation of death metal bands, the same one that spawned bands like Death, Dying Fetus, and Cephalic Carnage. Their sound is extreme and fast and technically proficient. I'm sure fans of this style of metal will love them.

Unfortunately, Gory Blister's catalogue of full-length albums is really small and relatively unknown. To date, they only have 4 full-length releases and a smattering of shorter works—all done over the last 20 years. I wish I knew more of their story; it seems like it would be interesting to know what's been going on behind the scenes. Their most recent release Earth-Sick (2012) included guest vocals by none other than Karl Sanders, a man known for high standards, not someone to appear on albums that aren't completely rock solid.

This album includes only seven live tracks, a mere sampling of a complete Gory Blister show. All seven tracks are available for free download at http://deliradio.com/gory-blister-2. This is the perfect way to get to know these guys and to begin investigating their back catalogue. There are also video clips on YouTube. The sound quality here—always something of a question with even the best live albums—is generally good, but I thought it was a little too heavy on the drums and vocals. The guitars sound fine, especially the solos, but the studio recordings honestly give a little more room to those crucial lead parts that make up a key part of this band's sound. I should point out, though, that this album is exactly what it claims to be—a raw performance, warts and all. No overdubs. No gimmicks. If listeners like what they hear on the live recording, they will certainly find plenty more to enjoy on the longer studio albums. Check these guys out! You won't be disappointed.

This release doesn't have an album cover; I decided to post the band's logo instead.

Enjoy.
