Unbeliever's Script is standard death metal – and their music encompasses everything that is good and bad about that genre. Yet this band is a bundle of unrealized potential
Sceptic (note the British spelling of the name) is a Polish outfit that has been around in one form or another since the mid '90s, and this is their third full-length release. The predominant sounds are borrowed from Death's Chuck Schuldiner, not only in the somewhat monotonous growling, but also in the instrumentation.
Most of the 9 songs are unimaginative and would require you to be a real death metal aficionado to appreciate the talent here. Many tracks are characterized by slow, deliberate, sludgy riffs giving them a morbid, funereal tone. Track 9, "Voices from The Past" is a prime example of that. But other tracks have a lot more energy. For example track 6, "Knowledge Gatherer", is a fast-paced piece driven by quick riffs and a breathless rhythm.
The absolute highlight of this CD is track 7, "Spiritually Tormented". It is an all instrumental progressive metal piece that shows this band's hidden musicianship. Then you listen again and you realize those flashes of guitar-led brilliance punctuate many of the other tracks too. But they aren't sufficient to rescue the CD. The murky artwork, the sludgy riffs in most songs, and the atonal grunting all conspire to drag this record to a level below its potential.
Above average death metal – except for those occasional flashes of brilliance when they break the death mold and show what they could accomplish if they would only drop those morbid off-the-shelf death metal chord progressions.
