German trio Kadavar raised plenty of eyebrows with their self-titled debut last year and things have moved pretty quickly ever since, the band recently getting scooped up by label heavyweight Nuclear Blast and now releasing their latest brew of '70s styled hard rock & doom metal, titled Abra Kadavar. If you loved the debut, then I can safely tell you that Lupus Lindemann (vocals/guitar), Mammut (bass), and Tiger (drums) did not disappoint one bit with this one.
Take one look at these guys, and you instantly know that they worship all things '70s, so yes, the Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hawkwind, Cactus, and Blue Cheer parade continues on Abra Kadavar, which, for lovers of that era, will be a good thing. Riffs, riffs, and then some more riffs are the name of the game here, with tunes like "Doomsday Machine", "Eye of the Storm", "Black Snake", and "Liquid Dream" just absolutely crushing everything in their path. It's not all slow and doomy however, as the band also throw in plenty of psychedelic & space rock moments (with help from some trippy keyboard effects), but again, it's about the riffs here, and each tune is jam packed with memorable, '70s styled guitar thunder and screaming lead lines. Just listen to those furious wah-wah breaks and effects laden vocals on the frightening "Rhythm For Endless Minds" to be taken right back to 1971.
This is just delicious, psych-inflected headbanging fun, and anyone, and I mean anyone, into heavy '70s sounds needs to scoop this up immediately. Nuclear Blast knew what they were doing signing this band, now if only they can get them and a few of their other retro roster acts out on a tour together here in North America that would indeed be something special.
