Adoran: Adoran
Minimalism is about slow development and gradual change, an exploration of the fundamental building blocks of music. Overall, it's a style that is simultaneously beautiful and haunting. Elements of its style appear in rock music from time to time; The Who, for example, used its components during the famous opening to "Baba O'Riley."
Adoran's debut may be described as a kind of minimalist doom. The music develops slowly, so don't expect the aggressive and fast chops of other kinds of heavy music. Still, things are just as deliberate here as they are with other metal releases, perhaps even more so. Playing at these slower tempos without anticipating the next note, beat, or chord, is harder than it seems. At the center of the music is Aidan Baker's bright and crisp drumming. He establishes the central beat or pulse of the music and keeps the ear rooted in time. The music surrounding this pulse is at once atmospheric and dream-like.
Even though this is technically a doom record, the overall feel of it is fairly upbeat. These guys aren't trying to out-evil other bands. Yes, the songs are really long, but they work really well and will reward the patient listener. The drum stick clicking that comes at the end of the first track was especially cool, the perfect way to take listeners out of the one track and prepare them for the next.
Some listeners will probably complain that the songs are too long and too repetitive. There's something to those charges, of course. But they overlook the need to experience songs that need to develop at a slower pace and that teach listeners to immerse themselves in the process of hearing music as it unfolds.
Give this one a shot.
