Combining death & black metal is nothing new these days, but we can safely say that California act Fiends at Feast do a damn fine job of mixing the two heavy metal sub-genres on their debut full length platter Towards the Baphomet's Throne. The trio throw all the tricks at the listener; bludgeoning guitar riffs, acrobatic bass lines, pummeling drum blasts, and evil growls & rasps. Everything you need right? Well, for the most part Fiends at Feast hit on all the right extreme metal buttons, as "I Am Death", "Walls of Worship", and "Hedonistic Heresy" offer up plenty of brutality as well as a slight technical slant that hooks you right in. Some of the songs however don't fare as well, and plod along with a sort of generic death 'n' doomy vibe that just doesn't stand out as anything other than ordinary.
The good outweighs the bad however, which makes Towards the Baphomet's Throne an interesting extreme metal tidbit and something to definitely check into. Complete with some really finely crafted guitar parts, this is an album that on the surface doesn't quite stand out from the pack but shows plenty of promise for a band that might yet turn into a 'beast' in the near future.
