Sadgiqacea: False Prism

And I thought learning how to pronounce Allegaeon was tough! Now I'm faced with the task of figuring out how to say "Sadgiqacea," let alone learning how to type it quickly. Fortunately the band provides a helpful guide—the word is pronounced "Sad-Juh-Kay-Sha."

Sadgiquacea is a two piece band from Philadelphia and False Prism is their first full-length release. They've only been on the scene since 2010, but they tour regularly and had a few shorter releases out there to give fans a taste of what they can do. The two players on this album are Evan Schaefer on vocals and guitar and Fred Grabosky on vocals and drums. Their music is probably best described as a mix of doom and sludge with a touch of post metal thrown in for its ambient qualities.

The album gives listeners four new tracks that come in at just under 40 minutes. For the most part, they sound great, though things do get a little bogged down at times. There's plenty of good musical ideas here, but the band could probably benefit from a little more tightening of what they are trying to do, if only to avoid putting all their ideas into a handful of long songs. It's better—at least sometimes—to do more with less, to play out fewer ideas and see what can happen. I also thought that the vocals seemed a little out of place at times. They bark and growl and shout when they should more often be part of the larger ambience of the music.
