Slatter, Tom: Three Rows of Teeth
Tom Slatter is a steampunk, sci-fi inspired, prog-rock singer-songwriter from London. Slatter has been described by the Steampunk Tribune as, "an experiment too far". Musically he sounds somewhere in the range of Radiohead and Nick Cave. Not like the full blown steam punk bands Vernian Process and Abney Park; no, this is more acoustic. Slatter has completed five other solo albums before Three Rows of Teeth.
Three Rows of Teeth features such subjects "as fake spiritualists, murder, time travel, replacing one's body parts with mechanical alternatives and flying an airship into a cloud full of birds with too many teeth" (http://www.tomslatter.co.uk/, 2013).
It is an interesting collection of sounds and melodies, with "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "These Tiny Things are Haunting Me" as some of the album highlights. The organ, keyboards and percussion sounds fit the steampunk genre well. The lyrics…well it is steampunk after all – see above.
"The Time Traveler Suite" is definitely worth the price of admission. Full of good acoustic guitar, early prog rock styled keyboards, and good vocals from Slatter. Yah, an epic, over 20 minute suite on a steampunk album, I do like the evolution…or dare I say progression.
If you are a fan of steampunk, this is a natural buy. If you want to hear something different and not pre-arranged, this is your ticket.
