Pirates, The: Land of the Blind
The Pirates are: Mick Green, on guitars and lead vocals; Romek Parol, on drums; and B J Anders, on bass and vocals. Mick Green had been a guitarist and singer going all the way back to the early British rock and rhythm & blues scene. In fact as far back as 1962. However, Green passed away in 2010, and this is a remastered release of the Pirates 1996 album Land of the Blind.
Mick Green's gruff voice could be described as a good mix between Bruce Springsteen and Ian Hunter. The music on this album ranges from early Rolling Stones and Ian Hunter to Bruce Springsteen.
The first track, "Underground" has that perfect mix of Springsteen and the Stones. Great classic rock.
"Wood in Your Fire" has those snide and edgy lyrics that many bands of the 70s used to great avail to sell records. Another good rhythm rocker.
"Shattered Glass" has that Southern twang of later Springsteen albums. The slow rhythm follows the pace of the story unfolding lyrically on this journey.
"Let's Eat" has a punky opening guitar chord, and is another fun lyrical excursion for Green.
The title track, "Land of the Blind", "Wonderous Place", and "Sex on Legs" are also good rockers. Three live tracks, "Rock Bottom", "I Can Tell", and "Lindy Lou" give you a peak into the sonic power this band used to bring to the stage.
Land of the Blind is a good album for anyone who loves classic rock/rhythm and blues delivered by the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, or Ian Hunter. A great introduction to The Pirates. But as I always say, "Better to have heard than to have been missed entirely". Check this album out as a good representative sample of music that used to rule the radio airwaves.
