How many times do you hear a "tough-guy" metal album and think, "that drummer carries the band"?
Yeah, there aren't many for me either.
Coalesce, however, has a great drummer (James DeWees); up front and very progressive. I haven't heard something like this since Crowbar's "Obedience Thru Suffering".
Unfortunately, there is almost no melody, just percussion and texture. On a disc like this, you need a great skinsman but you also need songs. The "singing" is coarse and rough, matching the music. Lots of aggression here, but alas nothing to counter it.
