William Gray: Silentio
William Gray is an Argentinian progressive rock band made up of Fausto Manes, on drums; Maximillano Rago, on bass; Sebastian Medina, on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars; Frederico Ferme, on acoustic and electric guitars; Frederico Zanzottera, on piano, Hammond organ, accordian and synthesizers; Juan Manuel Tavella, on sitar, santoor, accordian, guitar, piano, Rhodes & Hammond organ; and Carolina Azcune, on backing vocals. On Silentio, they also include a long list of guest musicians and choir members.
William Gray released their second album Silentio, in 2012. Their debut album was released in 2006.
This is a dark sounding concept album full of sounds from the past grandeur of prog rock's best days, assembled along with some references to Porcupine Tree and other Neo bands. They create and perform it all with their own brand of Argentinian swag.
Silentio is full of rich wonderful piano, power double guitars, drums, and the great rhythm of heavy bass. At times the sound reaches symphonic proportions with the added flutes, mandolins, and cellos. You also get to hear one of my favorite instruments, the sitar.
The standout tracks on the album for me were: "Auditorium", with its powerful choir supporting great music, "The Betrayal", a sad, but beautiful piano instrumental, and the closing track, "The Search", which lives up to all the pomp and circumstance a good closer should bring to the stage. Full of that dark tempest and some great piano. You just knew they had to have a trumpet fill somewhere and you won't be dissapointed.
If you want to hear some new sounds from Argentina's progressive music scene, this is an interesting diversion from the normal European metal prog to which you might be accustommed.
