Lukas, Al: In My Soul

Canadian guitarist Al Lukas has been around for a few years now having released his third album In My Soul in 2011, the follow up to his sophomore effort Fall and Flight, released in 2009. As the title suggests, this is music from the heart and every track bleeds with emotion and feel. Lukas is an excellent guitar player and showcases the instrument, whether acoustic or electric, on every track. This is at its heart a guitar album.

Beginning with a sweet guitar and bass groove, "The Answer" starts the album in fine style. Lukas's blues inflected gravelly voice is a perfect match for his crisp and clean electric and acoustic fretwork.

"Wild Child" is a little heavier and funkier with a rocking bluesy groove and some scorching guitar.

The very catchy "Didn't Get Lost In Losing You" and "Tell My Mind" have a poppier flavour, but the passion and stellar guitar work is still there while "It's Not Hard" would seem to channel solo Mark Knopfler in both the guitar and the vocals.

Lucas's softer side shines through on mellower tracks like the heartfelt "Sara Jane" and "Find Me" before ending with another Knopfler inspired slice of guitar rock in "Restless Flames". The only problem I have is the five minute gap of silence before we hear a hidden bonus track which I almost missed because of it.

That said, Lucas has taken the stuff life is shaped of and molded it into eleven deeply personal tracks that any fan of blues flavoured rock should enjoy. Music from the soul indeed.
