Apolokia: Kathaarian Vortex

According to their bio sheet, Apolokia are "Italy's most controversial, nihilist, elitistic and hateful black metal band". The band has been around since 1995 and have previous to Kathaarian Vortex released 2 demos and an MCD.

The band's bio describes the band as having a "1992 black metal sound" and oh man is that ever correct. Kathaarian Vortex sounds like early 90s Norweigen black metal so much that you'll swear at times that you're listening to early Mayhem. Ice cold and with an intense barrage of riffs, this is some primitive stuff.

Whether you like this or not really depends on how much you like raw black metal with an aversion to tunefullness: To some, raw black metal can be disorienting due to its lack of melody, and indeed at times the barrage of sound can be overwhelming. However, at the same time, the sheer aggression of the music pulls the listener in and is both compelling and repulsive at the same time.

Some will look at Apolokia as nothing but noise, but those who are truly into black metal will listen to Kathaarian Vortex and hear an outstanding album.
